The Humble Tumbler Introductory Wine Appreciation Course runs one evening a week (from 6.30pm – 8.30pm) for four weeks.  The course has been written specifically to cater to people who love drinking wine but are still quietly mystified by the sheer amount of information out there. Clare wrote the textbook from scratch to cover all the fundamentals without getting too caught up in the serious stuff. The 130 page text book covers the main grape varieties & regions in Australia (plus some lesser known ones too), how wine is made, how to judge quality, how to read labels, how to drink wine and how to make sense of the way the wine industry communicates with it’s consumers. Each bracket/flight is matched with cheese or charcuterie so you’ll also get to explore the concepts behind food and wine matching in all its glorious detail. It’s not exactly dinner proper, but it’ll certainly keep your 7pm hunger pangs at bay.

The wine appreciation course is broken up into four sessions, each session includes 7-9 wines + matched cheese & charcuterie with sourdough bread. WEEK ONE covers an introduction to vineyards, regions, grape varieties and wine making. We taste riesling; sauvignon blanc and introduce the three main concepts behind food and wine matching (which continues in detail throughout the course) WEEK TWO covers white wine and white winemaking in detail. We taste pinot grigio, pinot gris, chardonnay plus a line up of alternative whites. WEEK THREE introduces red wine and red winemaking in detail, including the use of oak, ageing wine, glassware, decanting & serving. We taste a delicious lineup of premium pinot noir, shiraz & cabernet sauvignon. WEEK FOUR continues with the reds – presenting a line up of alternative red varieties in Australia. We then move onto the world of sparkling wine – learning about how it’s made, the main styles and how to distinguish quality. We finish with an incredible lineup of Aussie sparkling, and a cheeky little dessert wine.

QUICK FAQS

YES! We can cater for vegetarians, coeliacs & other intolerances. However we can’t cater for vegans sorry – as some of the wines used are fined with egg or fish products. NO!  We wouldn’t recommend driving home after class, but our venues are always close to public transport.
